Success for Germany’s Beach Volleyball Teams at the Beach Nations Cup® Final 2006 presented by NESTEA
Berlin, 05 February 2006: The Men Beat Spain 2:1 and the Women Defeat the Netherlands 3:0 Norway’s men secure third place
Germany’s Beach Volleyball Teams are the big winners at the Beach Nations Cup® Final 2006 presented by NESTEA: The German omen (Stephanie Pohl/Okka Rau, Rieke Brink-Abeler/Hella Jurich and Sara Goller/Laura Ludwig) defeated the Dutch team (Rebekka Kadijk/Merel Mooren and Marritt Leenstra/Marleen van Iersel) in a clean sweep 3:0, cashing in 12’000 Euros in prize money. The German men (Julius Brink/Christoph Dieckmann, David Klemperer/Kjell Schneider and Markus Dieckmann/Eric Koreng) succeeded over the Spanish team (Pablo Herrera/Raul Mesa, John Garcia/Alex Ortiz and Javier Bosma/Inocencio Lario) 2:1, winning a total of 13,500 Euros. The Norwegian men secured third place with a 2:1 victory over Switzerland.
Germany’s men perfected the “double triumph” for the host nation with a three set victory (21:12, 15:21, 15:8) in the all deciding “double” (which will probably be called “Quattro” in the future). After the Germans won the first set with ease, the Spaniards came roaring back in the second. Tied at 4:4 in the third, the German men got the momentum in their favour and never looked back. So the Beach Nations Cup® title remains for Germany in 2006, after Germany had also won the premiere event in Braunschweig in February 2005.
The German team came back from a 0:1 defeat - David Klemperer/Kjell Schneider had lost to John Garcia/Alex Ortiz in three sets. Julius Brink/Christoph Dieckmann tied the score with an impressive straight-set performance against the European Champions Pablo Herrera/Raul Mesa. After repeating last years win of the Beach Nations Cup® Julius Brink said: “The tournament definitely has to be repeated in the future. It is just great to represent Germany as a team. It is an honour and lots of fun.”
Leading 2:0 after Stephanie Pohl/Okka Rau und Rieke Brink-Abeler/Hella Jurich had won their „singles“ matches, the unimportant „doubles“ match in the women’s tournament turned into clear two-set affair for the DVV-duos (21:12, 21:19): Rieke Brink-Abeler, Hella Jurich, Sara Goller und Laura Ludwig showed that they were also active in the first German division until a short while ago. The fans enjoyed the long rallies and the offensive combinations. Hella Jurich especially enjoyed the first women’s “four on four” match: “I was looking forward to the “doubles” match the whole time. We had a lot of fun in training and noticed how well we harmonise together on the court.”
The Norwegian team Jorre Kjemperud, Tarjei Skarlund, Vegard Hoidalen, and Terje Overgaard won the decisive „double“ against Switzerland’s Martin Laciga, Patrick Heuscher, Stefan Kobel, and Sascha Heyer in two sets (21:18, 21:16) securing third place in Berlin. Beforehand Patrick Heuscher/Stefan Kobel had put Switzerland in the lead 1:0 with a two set victory against Vegard Hoidalen/Terje Overgaard and Jorre Kjemperud/Tarjei Skarlund tied the score blanking Sascha Heyer/Martin Laciga. Team captain Kjemperud was pleased with the spot on the podium and promptly delivered a challenge to his opponents: „We were pretty disappointed we lost the semi-final against Germany. But next year we will be back to win the Beach Nations Cup®!“
